LECOM School of Pharmacy created Gateway Exams as part of an ongoing student success initiative. Faculty were encouraged to look at exam questions administered in the current academic year and identify those that would be essential for student progression, and categories were created to identify those questions. Using ExamSoft tagging, faculty identified questions within the curriculum that had been previously tested. In order to ensure curriculum mastery and retention, the School has set a goal for coming years to administer these questions prior to student progression. By using hard-stops within the curriculum, students progress only when they have mastered these tagged learning objectives, resulting in improved performance on experiential rotations and increasing NAPLEX and MPJE pass rates.
